Infection Control - The
Challenge of New Diseases
The last two decades have been unprecedented in
that a large number of new diseases have been described. In the
1980s HIV was first described and changed the practice of dentistry
with barrier protection, such as gloves for every patient. When more
information was available it was found unlikely that HIV was
transmitted by normal dental procedures. Since this time we have had
the challenge of Hepatitis C (the "silent" disease), SARS and now
Prions and Crutzfeldt-Jakob disease. With the discovery of these new
diseases do we need to change our infection control procedures? The
purpose of this presentation will be to review what dentists do and
what they need to do to keep themselves, their staff and their
patients safe from the newly discovered diseases.
